On a previous visit we sat in the "regular" dining area for tempura. I enjoyed the tempura but wasn't overly impressed. My wife reported the sushi above average. (Remember that Ocala isn't in the gourmet heartland!)
For a return visit yesterday we tried the teppanyaki and were pleasantly suprised. It was a typical teppanyaki presentation (a la Benihana) but without the vigor and patter. Only a few of the chefs were Asian, the others appeared to be recruited locally.
No matter, the credit goes to Kotobuki for fresh and tasty ingredients, and excellent cooking by the chefs. My wife ordered the Kamikazi noodles and shrimp and was not disappointed. I had the filet and scallops both of which were extraordinarily tender and flavorful. On top of the traditionally prepared vegetables and steamed rice, everyone received a couple of shrimp as appetizers.
The only negatives were the above mentioned lack of the traditional "event" feeling, although if you are not in the mood for audience participation meals (as I, curmudgeon that I am, often am) it is a blessing. They also didn't offer any dessert, but seemed intent on moving us on out to free up the table for the next group. |
