I typically don't write restaurant reviews, but I ate there recently while on vacation with my wife, father-in-law, and daughter. The restaurant was recommended by a few locals we had met while in town. When we got there, we thought the prices seemed a little high, but when we learned that the salad and soup bar, drinks and dessert were included it made us feel a little more comfortable and we headed in.
My wife had the filet mignon, which she loved. My daughter and father-in-law ended up splitting the "General" which was tasty and more than enough for them both. I had the Prime Rib, which I enjoyed -- but I'd probably get the Filet or "General" if I return.
The wait staff was quite friendly, and the salad bar was well stocked during our visit (we arrived at around 8 p.m. on a Tuesday). Getting to choose from a variety of desserts all helped make it a fun family meal.
No...this place wasn't fancy or elegant, but being Floridians, we enjoyed the opportunity to see the elk, moose, and pronghorn trophies on the walls and the rest of the Western decorations.... I've travelled all over U.S., Canada, Europe and the Caribbean and have eaten at many fine restaurants over the years. If I ever return to Laramie, I plan on going back to the Cavalryman. |

We got all dressed up, and thought we'd go to a nice place for dinner. It was a Sunday night. We went to the Cavalryman expecting it to be one of the nicer places in Laramie. The inside of the place was quite dirty and dingy. It looked like it hadn't had a coat of paint on any part of it for many years. We could live with that if the food and the service was good. Considering the prices on the menu, we thought we'd be getting a real treat. The salad bar was about half full, and they started cleaning it out and putting the food away at around 9:00 pm but they're open until 10:00pm. Our waitress came over and accidently dropped all the little unwrapped butter pads on the table. She picked them back up with her fingers and put them back in the little cup. We could hear the music playing, it was some kind of Disco music. We both thought that ruined any type of atmosphere the place could have had. Our waitress asked me two or three times, if I was done with with my plate. It seemed as if she just wanted to get out of there early, but it was still and hour before closing time. We were served only two small slices of bread with our meal, I thought for the price we paid, we might get at least 4 slices, but it didn't matter because I could barely eat the one tough piece I tried. Then came the biggest surprise. I told the waitress I would leave the tip in cash, she said OK. The rest of the bill went on a credit card. This morning when I checked my online bank account, I noticed they over charged me. The amount on my credit card slip is $49.18, but they had charged me $59.01. So, I left the tip in cash, and they took a hefty tip for themselves on top of that. Maybe they should change the name of the place to " The Highway Robberyman". |

The restaurant charges $20 for a pretty impressive meal. Nice ambiance and an attentive waitstaff. I've sent quite a few people there (I work front desk at a hotel), and I haven't heard a bad thing yet. Quite a few of the people I send there say they loved it.
The outside is ugly, the parking is on a dirt road. And it's not in walking distance to anything. |

As the Cavalryman is an upperclass restaurant serving common fare at elevated prices, one should expect prompt service, delectable food, and charming environment. In fact, the commercial jingle happily anounces "...it's like stepping back in time." Unfortunately, the only aspect that could be construed as historical is the age of the food. The restaurant is actually a converted ranch house with a delapidated exterior and dimly lit dining room. The miniscule spaces between tables makes for difficult traveling to and from the near empty salad bar. Additionally, if a fellow has an imaginative mind, he can pretend he is waiting in line for a carnival ride rather than the meal ordered over an hour ago. Alas, when the house specialty, prime rib, finally arrives the consistancy is remeniscant of a Cavalryman's boots. The burnt medium rare "steak" is slightly warm and sparingly flavored. There's no alcoholism here as the mixed drinks are suspiciously without rum. After such a disappointing dining experience don't expect to receive more than a ten percent discount on a $110 price tag for four meals. The manager would rather call the police and accuse you of "ticket-skipping" than prescribe to the policy that the customer is always right. Rude and insulting with a tinge of hostility sums up the demeanor of the woman who could think of a hundred excuses for our bad expirience, but could provide no satisfaction. |
